YUMMMM! Durion

Yesterday, Calvin and Carlie had a short day at school. They get a whole week off of school for Thanksgiving. At school they had a lunch with each other which included real mashed potatos, cornbread muffin, peas and corn mixed, cranberry sauce and a turkey loaf. Yummy. Colby and I got to sample some of it. The school kids made most of the food and they did a good job. The teacher also brought a durion to school. This is a fruit that grows in Asian countries. She told the kids that this fruit smelled really bad. She described the smell as old tennis shoe socks that hadn't been washed for a week and roasting over a fire. And if the kids could eat a piece of the fruit without plugging their noses she would give them extra credit in whatever subject they wanted to apply it too. She also shared that this fruit has about every nutrient a body needs. It has fats, protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals. So when the fruit got split open the first thought that went through our minds was that it looked like uncooked chicken legs. Might not taste like chicken but it looked like chicken.

So, here is Calvin. He felt like he was part of a Survivor episode. He put the fruit in his mouth, chewed it up and swallowed it withouth a flinch!!! Then he proceeded to show us his mouth for proof that he ate it. Calvin ate the fruit 3 different times. He asked the teacher if he could get 3 extra credits. Nice try but the teacher said no. Calvin said he actually liked the fruit.

Then it was Carlie's turn. Since she couldn't plug her nose, she must have decided that closing her eyes real tight would help. She proceeded to chew the fruit and half way between swallowing her fruit she started gagging. But between gagging and swallowing she got it down. What a sight to see! (and hear).

Is your stomach churning? Yummm! Stinky, smelly socks are something I've always wanted to eat. It just makes me salivate every time I smell them. Carlie was quite proud of herself (rightly so) and made sure everyone remembered that she didn't plug her nose.

Colby decided that he had to try too. Actually his friend who is 6 months younger than him just got done trying it and didn't even flinch. Colby didn't want to be left out. So here he is cautiously looking at the fruit and listening to the teacher where to stick his finger in the fruit. I guess there are parts of it that are real stringy and other parts that are mush. So the teacher told him to stick his finger in the mushy part. That way its less of a chance of gagging.

Colby is skeptical the whole time. But he wanted to be a part of the fun and know what everyone else was talking about and experiencing.
Yep! Yucky! Did I try? No!!!!! Colby comes by being a picky eater honestly. I guess I have to have one in the family. (besides me)

I laughed right out loud at the pics and your descriptions! Calvin's Survivor thing is right on. Good job! And kudos to Carlie - poor little thing...she looked quite miserable but like you she did better than I would have. Colby's face is too funny! Thanks for the endorphin fix.

I would completely join you Shelly--I don't think I could have tasted something that smelled like that. How adventuresome the grandkids are. Mom
